What Is Rhinoplasty?
The operation performed to reshape the bone and cartilage structure in the nose is called rhinoplasty (nose aesthetic surgery). Although the nose has an important place in the middle of the face in terms of aesthetics, it is an organ that also has important functional duties that allow us to breathe and smell.
Who Is Rhinoplasty Performed For?
Aesthetic nose surgery: It means reshaping the nose by planning according to the person’s own face, skin, and nose anatomy. The nose is not only aesthetically important, but also a functionally important organ that allows us to breathe.
Aesthetic nose surgery can be performed on both men and women, if they have completed the age of bone development. This age limit is generally 16-17 for girls and 17-18 for boys.
Anyone who has problems in nasal breathing and does not like the appearance of their nose aesthetically can be a candidate for rhinoplasty. It is very important to make a preliminary examination and to fully understand the expectations of the patient from the surgery when deciding for surgery.
How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?
Rhinoplasty; is divided into classes as primary/revision; open/closed; nose tip surgery/ septorhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty can be performed in two ways as open or closed technique. Which technique will be applied to the person is decided because of the communication between the patient and the physician.
Techniques applied:
1- Primary rhinoplasty: These are surgeries performed for aesthetic purposes, in which the problems related to the shape of the nose are eliminated. In rhinoplasty operations, the nasal arch is removed, the nasal projection is shortened or lengthened, the cartilages are reduced, the tip of the nose is lifted if it is low, and it is made proportional to the face.
2- Revision rhinoplasty: Revision rhinoplasty expression is used for the second operation or every subsequent operation in noses that have had previous nose surgery but have not been successful or have not achieved the desired result. Sometimes very big problems can be solved with small interventions, but sometimes in cases where there is tissue deficiency, restructuring may be required to complete the deficiencies of the main cartilage and even bone structure that sustain the nose. For this purpose, cartilage in the nose can be used, but sometimes it may be necessary to use cartilage tissues in the ear or ribs.
3- Closed rhinoplasty: It is applied to patients whose main problem is in the bone and cartilage roof and who do not have any obvious problems in the nasal tip and septum. The surgery is performed through incisions made through the holes at the tip of the nose. Compared to open rhinoplasty surgery, edema is minimal and recovery is faster.
4- Open rhinoplasty: It is a technique performed by making an anterior incision on the tip of the nose in patients with both asymmetries at the tip of the nose and deviation of the septum. It is also a preferred method in revision surgery in patients who have had previous surgery. Since the necessary supports can be applied to all structures more easily in this technique, the risk of problems such as post-operative nasal tip droop or septum slippage is minimized.
5- Septorhinoplasty: These are the operations in which the formations in the nose that cause breathing problems are removed, together with rhinoplasty. The structure called septum is corrected and the arch and cartilage curvatures that prevent breathing are removed.
6- Nasal tip surgery : It is a surgical technique applied when it is desired to correct only the tip of the nose without touching the bone structures of the nose. With this surgery, nasal tip droop can be corrected, asymmetries can be eliminated, the tip of the nose can be reduced. Since this technique does not interfere with bone structures, swelling and bruising are not seen around the eyes. Compared to other techniques, patients can return to their normal lives faster.
How Should Rhinoplasty Be Done In Men?
Acquired nose shape is more common in men due to heavy sports and a much more active childhood. At the same time, nasal aesthetic surgery may be needed in men in cases such as genetic factors, the shape of the nose is larger or smaller than the face and other organs in the face, and the nasal arch is protruding. The most important point when performing rhinoplasty in men is to understand exactly what the patient wants. Some factors should be taken into consideration in order not to femininize the man in rhinoplasty for men. Creating a curved nose structure in men gives a feminine expression to the man’s face. Therefore, men should have a flatter nasal ridge. In addition, the tip of the nose should not be lifted as much as women. In men, the nose lift angle should be around 90-95 degrees.
