Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Endoscopic sinus surgery is a surgical method used in chronic and recurrent rhinosinusitis and nasal polyp diseases when adequate improvement cannot be achieved with drug treatment or when drug treatment is required very frequently due to recurrent attacks. The aim of the surgery is to clean the diseased tissues from the nose and paranasal sinuses and to try to prevent the recurrence of the disease by expanding the openings called ostium where the sinuses open to the nose. Another purpose of widening the sinus openings is to ensure that the drugs applied topically to the nose can penetrate into the sinuses.

Endoscopic sinus surgery is performed through the nose with special endoscopes without making an incision in the nose.

Endoscopic sinus surgery is recommended for patients with chronic sinusitis, patients with nasal polyposis, patients with antrochoanal polyps, inverted papilloma patients, those with disseminated eye disease due to sinusitis, masses of the nasal cavity or sinuses, those with cerebrospinal fluid leaks after traumas, and nasal and sinuses for unstoppable nose bleeding control. It can be applied successfully in many related diseases.

It may be recommended to use antibiotics after surgery, to use serum water that moisturizes the nasal cavity and to reduce crusting, and to use cortisone-containing sprays and drops after the surgery in patients with allergies and polyps.

After endoscopic sinus surgery operations, nasal cavities can be dressed in the office environment at repetitive intervals of one week, until healing is achieved.

Complications that can be seen after endoscopic sinus surgery, nosebleeds, nasal inflammation, adhesions in the nasal cavity, problems related to narcosis, as well as more rarely intraocular bleeding, carotid artery injury, eye injury, double vision, visual disturbances, tear duct injury and brain-related problems can be seen.
