Septoplasty

The treatment of septum deviation is surgery. This surgery is called septoplasty. Septoplasty operations are preferably performed under general anesthesia. It is applied in two ways as closed septoplasty and open technique septoplasty.

Closed septoplasty is a type of surgery in which the deviation of the septum inside the nose is mild to moderate, and it takes about 30 minutes by entering through the nose. In closed technique septoplasty, the outer shape of the nose is not touched, only the inner side is corrected. If the nasal turbinates are not touched, it is not necessary to put a tampon in the nose.

Open technique septoplasty is when the septum is too curved, from the outside of the septum; It is a type of surgery that needs to be supported by cartilage from the ear or rib, lasting 1-1.5 hours, and opening the nose skin by cutting it from the outside. In this surgery, if the tip of the nose is low, additional support will be placed, so its appearance may change slightly, but this surgery is performed for functional purposes, not for aesthetic purposes. What is desired here is to allow the patient to breathe. After the surgery, there is a stitch at the tip of the nose. It is not necessary to put a tampon in the nose if no operation has been performed on the nasal turbibate.
Closed technique septoplasty or open technique septoplasty operations can be performed together if the person wants to have aesthetic nose surgery.

In both closed and open technique septoplasty, problems such as crusting and drying may occur until the nasal mucosa heals, which lasts 2-3 weeks after the operation. Patients should protect their nose from impact for 6 weeks. They can start sports after 2 weeks. It is okay for patients to wear glasses after septoplasty surgery.
